Bao Makers stands out with its East meets West concept, a change from the usual brunch food served in cafes in Singapore. As the name suggests, this cafe and bakery specialises in the chinese-styled buns aka 包 serves with chilli-crab, salted egg yolk, etc. Located amongst many new hipster cafes in Horne Road, they too serve specialty coffee and desserts on top of their specialty baos.
The whitewashed, minimalistic design of the cafe screams hipster, contrary to old-school baos served. The serve 6 different flavours of baos, which you are allowed to mix-and-match with a minimum order of 2. Eating with your hands is highly recommended! Fear not, gloves are provided.
The salted egg fever has hit Singapore hard with its salted egg croissants. The Bao Makers have cleverly replaced the croissant with baos. With the bao absorbing the salted egg yolk, this dish should be perfect. But we find that the prawns were too big (kept that way for presentation purposes or to retain the freshness of the prawns maybe?) and with each bite of the prawn, you leave a gapping hole in the bao and lose the salted egg flavour in the dish. Overall the dish is good with room for improvement.
We saved the best for the last and this Chilli Crab Bao by The Bao Makers is a must-try! Look at the generous serving of crab meat perfectly paired with the spicy sweetness of the gravy. We can’t get enough of this dish!
Don’t say we didn’t warn you, this is quite the messy dish (hence the gloves), but we guarantee that it’s worth it!
Coffee was only so-so. Something that can be improved given the many hipster cafes around competing for the title of the best coffee served.
