Cheap and Good Food in Singapore part 1

Want to enjoy some good food fare in Singapore while easing in on your wallet? We hear you!

And this is possibly/definitely only the first part…

(*You might have to queue for some of these eateries listed though…)

William’s Cooked Food

Cheap and Good Food in Singapore | Good Food in Toa Payoh | William's Cooked Food | Hokkien Noodles

Hokkien Noodles; $3.50

With a not so appealing signboard (the kind with faded photos, unintended sepia mode… HAHA), this food stall is manned by a very friendly and well-endowed auntie. We believe her husband should be the chef!

#sorrynotsorryabouthechili

The thing about their hokkien noodles is the very strong wok hei taste that we loooooveee, and of course the very yummy gravy that the noodles comes in. On top of that, their seafood tastes fresh too.

Cheap and Good Food in Singapore | Good Food in Toa Payoh | William's Cooked Food | Seafood Hor Fun

Smooth, soft kwayteow noodles drenched in starchy gravy, yumyum.

There’s something about this stall.

Cheng Long Fish Soup 成龙鱼汤

Cheap and Good Food in Orchard | Cheap and Good Food Singapore | Cheng Long Fish Soup | Fried Fish Thick Beehoon Soup

Fried Fish Thick Beehoon Soup; $4

We have always been impressed by the size of the fried fish slices offered at Cheng Long.

A huge bowl of noodles in fish soup with thick chunks of fried fish, anyone?

Z&Y Western

A little stall hidden in a pretty quiet coffee shop located right opposite the main entrance of Pei Chun Public School, we didn’t expect to find this quality of food here.

Cheap and Good Food in Singapore | Z&Y Western Food | Salmon Steak, Boiled Vegetables and Rice

Salmon Steak, Boiled Vegetables and Rice; $8.10

BUT WE DID. It’s amazing how their food looks so good and tastes even better.

Other than the orbiang plates they use, their standard of food is even better than some of the restaurants out there.

Cheap and Good Food in Singapore | Good Food in Toa Payoh | Z&Y Western Food | Grilled fish, mash potato and baked beans

Grilled fish, mash potato and baked beans; $6.50

Definitely worth giving it a try, especially if you’re in the neighbourhood.

PS: The uncle chef is pretty cool too!

Ah Chuan Oyster Omelette

They are only opened for a few hours everyday, and both their oyster omelette and prawn omelette is the bomb! But perhaps the oyster omelette would seem like a better deal – value wise.

Oyster Omelette; $4 / $5 / $8

Cheap and Good Food in Singapore | Good Food in Toa Payoh | Ah Chuan Oyster Omelette | Prawn Omelette

Cheap and Good Food in Singapore | Good Food in Toa Payoh | Kim Keat Hokkien Noodles | Claypot Hokkien Noodles

Claypot Hokkien Noodles for 2; $10

Famed for their claypot hokkien noodles, this dish comes with a generous amount of their signature fried lard, lala shells and peeled prawns.

Closer look at the lard

Cheap and Good Food in Singapore | Good Food in Toa Payoh | Kim Keat Hokkien Noodles | Claypot Hokkien Noodles

Served bubbling in a claypot, it looks super instagram-worthy and of course, it tastes good too.

Cheap and Good Food in Singapore | Good Food in Toa Payoh | Ocean Curry Fish Head | Petai and Otak

A Pinch of Petai and Otak; $4

Ocean Curry Fish Head can also be found in the same coffee shop. We didn’t have the extra space to try the curry fish head, so we ordered a pinch of petai and a slice of otak…

Came up to a whopping $4! Wonder how much the curry fish head would cost.
Hmmm.

Angel Horse Teochew Fish Soup

Cheap and Good Food in Singapore | Good Food in Toa Payoh | Angel Horse Teochew Soup | Stall Front

We stumbled upon this stall when we noticed a long, snaking queue right in front of it. So we decided, very ‘Singaporeanly’, to join the queue! I mean… it has to be good right?

Cheap and Good Food in Singapore | Good Food in Singapore | Angel Horse Teochew Soup | Sliced Fish Soup

Sliced Fish Soup; $3 / $4 / $5

Soup was seriously yummy! They must have boiled it under slow fire for a long enough time to taste this good. Fish slices were super fresh and tasty! Really liked the texture of this fish, not sure what kind though. From the heavens, prolly. (Get it? Angel Horse? :P)

North-East Singapore:

Dju Dju Nasi Padang

They were featured on several food shows and we can see why. You can easily spot them with a long queue right in front of their stall, or if there isn’t any queue, it means they have ran out of everything so #fyl.

Cheap and Good Food in North East Singapore | Good Food in Serangoon | Dju Dju Indonesian Food | Assam Curry Fishhead

Assam Curry Fish Head; $18 – $22

Personally, our favourite would be the Assam Curry Fish Head. Even if you’re not a fan of assam in general, this is worth a try. The price of this dish depends on the size of the fish head, and it comes in a claypot with an abundance of lady’s finger and eggplant too!

Don’t forget to take the awesomelicious chili that would spice up your day instantly.

Licker’s Ice CreamCheap and Good Food in North East Singapore | Good Food in Hougang | Lickers Ice Cream | Price BoardOne too many dessert/ice cream palours all around?

Well, we stumbled upon Lickers Ice cream and thought it was worth mentioning as they had unique flavours of ice cream you wouldn’t find anywhere else.

Cheap and Good Food in North East Singapore | Good Food in Hougang | Lickers Ice Cream | Waffle with Yakult Oreo Ice Cream

Waffle with Yakult Oreo Ice Cream; $6.90

Can you find yakult oreo ice cream anywhere else? The answer is no.

We thought it was a refreshing flavour, with the slightly sour-ish yakult taste, with the crunchy oreo cookies in it. Welikey!

Charco’s (HALAL!)

Cheap and Good Food in North East Singapore | Good Food in Serangoon | Charco's | Quarter Herb Chicken

This was a surprise find in the heartlands! Charco’s specialises in Portuguese-style food, and its concept reminds us a lil of the phased out Kenny Rogers’ Roasters.

Cheap and Good Food in North East Singapore | Good Food in Serangoon | Charco's | Salad Bar Meat comes with a choice of two side dishes from their salad bar as well. However, if you’re not a fan of cream/mayonaise food, then this might not be your ideal variety of side dishes.

Side dishes available:

Coleslaw salad, potato salad, egg salad, seafood salad, caesar salad, greek salad, fruits salad, chicken avocado salad, tuna pasta salad, pesto pasta salad, corn cob, yellow rice, briyani rice, green peas, potato wedges and cream potato

Cheap and Good Food in Singapore | Halal Good Food in Singapore| Charco's | Quarter Herb Chicken with two sides

Quarter Herb Chicken with two sides; $11.30

If you’re in a dilemma as to what to choose, and would prefer perhaps an additional side dish, you just have to top up another $2.30. On the other hand, if you would be contented with just a piece of quarter herb chicken and chips, it would only cost you $8.20.

They seem to pride themselves as the best halal ribs in town, so perhaps you can give that a try too!
